After their withdrawal from WWI, the civil war and a famine, Soviet Russia was left depleted near to complete ruin. Industrial production was at a standstill, fuel and food were scarce, even basic transportation was a challenge. The peasants needed the products of industry, and the industrial centers needed food. The Soviet government and its people faced a new set of immense challenges, and even though they had already sacrificed so much and were burdened so heavily, would be forced to endure another hard struggle.
